Apple Opens Applications for Vision Pro Development Kits and Labs in July: A New Era for App Testing and Optimization

Apple has announced that it will open applications for Vision Pro development kits for developers starting from July.

This follows the recent release of a suite of developer tools, including a Vision Pro software ‘Simulator’. Apple’s intention is to provide developers with the chance to experience the headset firsthand.

Details regarding the application for the Vision Pro development kit will be made available in July. However, the exact number of kits to be distributed and their shipping dates remain undisclosed. Given Apple’s reputation for maintaining strict confidentiality, it’s expected that chosen developers will be bound by stringent non-disclosure agreements concerning their interaction with the device.

The developer kit is not the only avenue for developers to trial their apps on the actual headset. They can also apply to participate in ‘Vision Pro developer labs’.

These labs offer developers the chance to test their visionOS, iPadOS, and iOS apps on the Apple Vision Pro, with direct support from Apple. The aim is to optimize apps and games to ensure they’re ready for the Vision Pro’s customer release. The labs will be hosted in six global locations: Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Applications for these labs are also set to open in July.

Moreover, developers can request Apple to review their app on visionOS. However, this service is limited to existing iPhone and iPad apps, not new apps developed specifically for visionOS:

For developers with an existing iPad or iPhone app on the App Store, Apple offers assistance in testing it on the Vision Pro. Developers can request a compatibility evaluation from App Review to receive a report on their app or game’s appearance and functionality in visionOS.

Although the Vision Pro is not expected to be available until early 2024, Apple is keen to have a range of third-party apps prepared and ready for its launch.
